Crime Statistics

According to crime data released by the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services, Nassau County recorded a total of 13,363 index crimes in 2018, marking a five-year low. Property crimes accounted for most reports, with 11,858 incidents, while violent crimes accounted for 1,504 incidents. Larceny-theft was the most common property crime with 10,178 while aggravated-assault was the most recurring violent crime with 951 incidents.

Criminal Records

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services serves as the central repository for criminal history record information in the state. It compiles and maintains criminal records of convicted offenders in Nassau County and other parts of New York. Interested parties can obtain copies of their own records by submitting a request to the department. Records provide general information such as the individual’s name, date of birth, address, sex, race and the offense for which he/she was convicted for. Records may also include an SSN or NYSID number as well as details of the subject’s arrest.

To obtain a record, interested parties may be required to schedule a fingerprinting appointment with a recognized vendor. Members of the public will also be required to provide a copy of a valid government-issued ID.

How to Find Sex Offender Information

The New York Division of Criminal Justice Services maintains an online sex offender registry that contains public information on level 1, 2 and 3 sex offenders. Searches can be conducted by last name, zip code or county. Members of the public can also filter results to reveal offenders based on their custody status. The registry provides general information on sex offenders, including their known address of residence, work address, conditions of release and details of the crime they were convicted for. The registry may also provide additional information such as the offender’s vehicle information, photos, and any known alias(es).

How to Obtain Inmate Records

General information on inmates held in correctional facilities managed by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office can be obtained by mail, in person or by phone. Members of the public can also obtain inmate information using the county’s V.I.N.E service. Written requests should be sent to:

Nassau County is home to multiple courts, including two supreme courts, a county court, a family court, a surrogate court, a county district court, and two city courts as well as town courts and village courts. Interested parties can request copies of records by submitting a request to the clerk at the courthouse where the case was filed. The Supreme Court has broad jurisdiction over most criminal cases while county courts have general jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases.

Vital Records

Vital records for Nassau County can be obtained at the state and municipal levels. All requests must be accompanied by a valid government-issued I.D. Accepted forms of primary identification include a driver’s license, passport, U.S military photo I.D, and a state-issued, non-driver photo ID card.

How to Get Divorce Records

Certified copies of a divorce decree can only be obtained by contacting the county clerk at the courthouse where the divorce was granted. To assist with the search, interested parties are required to provide as much relevant information as necessary, such as the names of both parties, the date of the divorce, and the court case number.

In addition, the New York State Department of Health Vital Records Office maintains copies of divorce certificates for divorces that occurred in Nassau County and the rest of the state from 1963 till present. Unlike divorce decrees, divorce certificates only contain basic information, such as the date and place of the divorce and the name of the spouses. Members of the public can submit requests vial mail by sending a completed application form to:

How to Get Birth, Death, and Marriage Records

Copies of birth and death records can be ordered directly from the New York State Department of Health Vital Records Office. It maintains copies of all marriage records since 1880 as well as births and death records in the state from 1881 till present. Access to these vital records is restricted to only eligible applicants, namely:

  • The individual named on the record (birth certificate)
  • Parent, spouse, sibling or child of the named registrant
  • Any other person with a legal right or claim

Marriage records can only be obtained by spouses or anyone with a court order. Requests can be submitted in person at:

Submitted applications should also be accompanied by a check or money order for the appropriate fee made out to the “New York State Department of Health”. Written applications should be sent by mail.
