How to Find Herkimer County Sex Offender Information
The New York Division Of Criminal Justice Services is responsible for maintaining the New York Sex Offender Registry. The register is updated with information gathered from each county in the state. When sex offenders are released from prison, they are required to register with the Division of Criminal Justice Sevices, the register will then carry basic information about the offender including regular demographical data like name and contact information, address, physical description, employment information, offence, risk level and so on.
A sex offender’s risk level is usually determined by the sentencing court upon release. The court re-examines case details like number and age of victims, weapons used, relationship to the victim, etc. These details help the court’s assessment regarding if the offender is likely to repeat the offence or the level of danger the offender poses to the community. The court may assign one of the following three risk levels:
- Level 1 ( which means there is low risk of the offender repeating the offence),
- Level 2 (moderate risk of repeating the offence), and
- Level 3 (high risk of repeating the offence and a potential threat to public safety).
These risk levels determine the type and amount of information to be released to the public and also affects the offender’s duration of registration. That is, Level 1 sex offenders are mandated to register for 20 years while Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders are required to be registered for life.
Inquirers may search the database using the offender’s last name, county, zip code and custody status. It should be noted that only Level 2 and 3 offenders are included in the online database. The Inquirer must have the individual’s name, exact address, Social Security number/ License number and Date of birth available for confirmation.
