Are Court Records Public in Rockland County
Per the New York Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), court records are public records. Therefore, individuals can inspect or obtain copies of court records from any Rockland County record custodian's office. How to Conduct a Rockland County Case Records Search
Record seekers can search and view court records online through the New York State Courts Electronic Filing (NYSCEF) or eCourt portals. To access court records through the NYSCEF, individuals can either create an account or search as a guest. A search can be conducted by case number or name. The user can also select the New Cases tab to search for new cases filed electronically on a selected date. The eCourt portal allows access to future appearance dates for cases in Criminal and Family Courts and active and disposed of cases in the Civil Supreme Court.
Alternatively, requesters can visit the Rockland County Clerk’s office to access court documents recorded within the last six years. However, court documents recorded over six years can be accessed at the Rockland County Archives Building. Inquiries on court record location can be directed to (845) 638-5094. Upon getting to the Rockland County Clerk’s office or Archives Building, in-person requesters must fill out a "File Request Card". Copies of court records cost $.50 per copy, and certified copies cost $1.25 per page, $5 minimum.
Rockland County Civil Court Case Records
Civil court case records are proceedings maintained by the Rockland County Clerk that do not involve criminal offenses. The Rockland County Court has limited jurisdiction in civil cases involving amounts not exceeding $25,000. Rockland County civil records can be viewed online through the WebCivil Supreme portal. Requesters can conduct a search by index number, party name, attorney/firm name, justice, or document. Requesters can also view or obtain copies of civil court records at the courthouse during normal office hours (Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.). A case number or party name will be required to facilitate the search.
Rockland County Criminal Court Case Records
Criminal court case records contain information about individuals who have violated state or county laws. The Rockland County Court handles felony cases whose punishment may include imprisonment that exceeds one year. Requests for criminal court records can be made online or in person at the courthouse.
