Orange County Crime Numbers

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS) collates crime data from different law enforcement agencies in the state and provides crime statistics for all counties. Its latest annual reports show that 874 violent crimes and 5,865 property crimes were reported in Orange County in 2017. These figures represent an 0.7% uptick in violent crime rate and a 24.1% decline in property crime rate between 2013 and 2017.

A closer look at the 2017 crime data for Orange County reveals that there were 8 murders, 165 rapes, 198 robberies, and 503 aggravated assaults. Reported incidents of property crimes in that year include 613 burglaries, 5,078 larcenies, and 174 motor vehicle thefts. Compared to the 2013 crime data, rape was the only crime to record a higher figure in 2017. The county’s 123% increase in rape rate is partly due to the recent expanded definition of the crime.

The five-year crime trend for Orange County also indicates falling murder (33.3%), robbery (28.5%), and aggravated assault (0.4%) rates. Furthermore, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft rates declined by 48.7%, 19.6%, and 19.8% respectively.

Orange County Criminal Records

The NYS DCJS provides fingerprint-based criminal history checks for citizens of the state via MorphoTrust USA. Note that you can only request your own criminal history record and not for another person. Start your request by scheduling a fingerprinting appointment with IdentoGO via their website or by calling (877) 472-6915. When asked about a Personal Record Review service code, provide 15464Z to request a suppressed record and 15465F to receive an unsuppressed record.

Bring the recommended form of ID requested when scheduling your appointment to the fingerprinting appointment. The fee for this service is $62 payable with a check, credit card, or money order. When paying with a check or money order, make it out to Idemia. The DCJS will mail your criminal record history within 7 – 10 business days after the fingerprinting appointment.

Orange County Police Reports

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the various police departments of the cities and towns in the county provide copies of incident and accident reports upon request. The law enforcement agencies require the public to submit FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) requests for police records. To obtain the records of the Sheriff’s Office, bring or mail this FOIL Request form to:

Captain Paul Arteta #007
Orange County Sheriff’s Office
110 Wells Farm Road, Goshen, N.Y. 10924

Contact the Record Divisions of the police departments in the county to obtain incident/accident reports generated by these law enforcement agencies. For example, the Police Department of the City of Middletown provides a different FOIL Request form. Complete and mail this to:

For accident reports, visit the Records Division of the Middletown Police Department located at 2 James Street, Middletown, NY 10940. This office is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. It charges $10 for each copy of an accident report.

Orange County Sex Offender Information

The DCJS maintains the New York State Sex Offender Registry and makes some of this database available to the public online. The publicly available database contains identifying information about Level 2 (moderate risk) and Level 3 (most likely to reoffend) offenders. To find registered sex offenders living in Orange County, visit the search page of the New York State Sex Offender Registry. Select Orange from the county drop-down menu to restrict your search to the cities, towns, and villages of the county. You can also search the registry by name to find specific offenders and by zip code to find offenders living in your neighborhood.
